March 14, 2016–Darla Fimpel, Piemaker

Happy Pie Day!

It’s Pie Day! You know, 3-14. So today I’m celebrating one of the most famous pie makers in Alaska–Darla Fimpel of Eureka Lodge at Mile 128 on the Glenn Highway.

I don’t know Fimpel personally, but we have a very special history together– I always stop at Eureka Lodge and have a piece of her pie every summer on the annual trek to the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez. It’s ritual, at this point. Banana Cream is my go-to addiction. But I’ve also had her chocolate, and her coconut and apple. And cherry. Oh, and blueberry. And that one time, I had the lemon meringue.

Eureka Lodge is old-time Alaska. Friendly people and a collection of eclectic buildings in one of the most beautiful settings on earth, the Majestic Valley.

So Happy Pie Day, Darla! Thank you for keeping the pastry case full. You make the big wide lonesome a little less daunting. See you this summer!

I don’t know why coffee gets all the billing. It’s the pies, people! Go for the pies!

Cherry, banana cream, chocolate, blueberry, apple, lemon meringue, coconut, all my pretties.

This is Majestic Valley. Darla’s pies live here.

Follow the Glenn Highway from Anchorage to Eureka, 128 miles to pie heaven.
